LONG BRANCH, N.J.: Jersey Shore property owners should check their stucco and EIFS walls before winter weather sets in. That’s the advice from CMB Jersey Shore Stucco and EIFS Repair & Installation, a contractor that has served New Jersey and New York since 1985.

The timing ties to NOAA’s U.S. Winter Outlook, released October 15. It covers December through February. It favors a wetter than normal winter along the East Coast. It also leans warmer than normal for much of the East. NOAA expects a strong El Nino to shape the season.
That matters at the Shore. David Robinson, who served as New Jersey’s state climatologist for 35 years, has noted that coastal storms tend to be more common in El Nino winters. The February 2026 blizzard also caused coastal flooding along the Jersey Shore. A warmer winter isn’t a safer one for stucco if it’s also a wet one.
“More rain means more chances for water to find a small crack,” said Rich Lapinski, founder and owner of CMB. “Once water gets behind stucco, you usually can’t see it from the outside until the damage has spread. The best time to find a weak spot is before the wet months, not after.”
CMB suggests owners walk around their home or building and look for these warning signs: cracks in the stucco, bulging areas, peeling paint, and discolored patches.
If owners spot any of these, an inspection can show what’s going on inside the wall. CMB inspects stucco and EIFS three ways. A visual inspection checks the surface. A thermal scan finds hot and cold spots in the wall. These can point to trapped moisture. An invasive test uses a small drilled hole to measure moisture levels, and the hole is sealed when the test is done.
“A small crack is a small fix,” said Lapinski. “Wait until spring, and it may not be small anymore.”
